Space Flight Certified Coatings

Andrews Powder Coating, Inc. worked with the leading Prime military contractor in developing the first powder coatings certified for space flight. This arduous project took 3.5 years to attain space flight certification and allowed both companies to learn and benefit from the experience. That MIL-SPEC flight certification project was the basis for a new military satellite requirement for electrically insulative dielectric coatings used for power supplies. The work was done to the MIL-PRF-24712B specification with the space flight certification being the platform. This has elevated Andrews Powder Coating, Inc. to being pre-qualified for any MIL-SPEC powder coating project that the certifying company will produce. This pushes Andrews Powder Coating, Inc. into rarified territory, allowing you to work with comfort knowing that these qualifications are already in-place.

Andrews Powder Coating, Inc. Awarded Contract to Develop Powder Coatings for the New Spacesuit for NASA’s Artemis III Moon Surface Mission

In 2024 Andrews Powder Coating, Inc. was contacted by a major Prime contractor to assist with developing a powder coating for the new NASA Artemis Space Suit. We were very proud to be selected to assist with this new suit and our founder Scott Andrews worked with the contractor to design a coating system to be tested and approved for this critical application. The parts were for the shielding of the helmet that would be seen by the astronauts. The coating had to deliver exacting durability, meet MIL-PRF-24712B, and be able to withstand the testing for flight certification. The coating that we have recommended was used and the reality of the new suits is now here.

When NASA sends the first astronauts to explore near the lunar South Pole, moonwalkers will wear spacesuits provided by Axiom Space. NASA selected the company to develop the modern suits for the Artemis III mission and participated in activities when the first prototype was recently revealed at the Space Center Houston in Texas.

The new Artemis III spacecraft will land astronauts, including the first woman, on the Moon to advance long-term lunar exploration and scientific discovery. Called the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or AxEMU, the spacesuit builds on NASA’s spacesuit prototype developments and incorporates the latest technology, enhanced mobility, and added protection from hazards at the Moon.

Andrews Powder Coating, Inc. is honored to be chosen to assist in creating this advanced space suit to further America’s new era on the Moon and missions beyond.
